UBUNTU

"I am because we are"

I started Ubuntu along side a few other young women on the New Paltz campus to help diversify the theatre arts community. Ubuntu is a group of primarily marginalized students at SUNY New Paltz who strive to educate others on the misrepresentation and lack of information on marginalized people in the U.S. through the arts, of all kinds. Within our own community we work towards having workshops, scene studies, visual arts performances, etc. that center around the “margins.” By creating our own work we are reclaiming our narratives and reframing people’s perception. In using the word Ubuntu, we aim to create a community, in which we can all relate, educate, and express ourselves.

A CLOSER LOOK

We held interactive programs that educated others on the importance of diverse representation in the arts and media. What was/is so important about this club is that it is not exclusive to only the theatre community, but anyone who has interests in the arts and media.

LATINO WEEK FASHION SHOW

We were asked to perform at the annual Latino Week Fashion Show at SUNY New Paltz. We performed a collaborative self-written spoken-word-like piece that identified the unique varieties of the Latino community and emphasized the overall Ubuntu mission statement.
